Last night the news said J.D. Salinger passed away, at the ripe old age of 91. Like many other teenagers, I was also captured by his “Catcher in the Rye”, spent many nights reading and re-reading it, finding my own meanings in it and being certain the world is wrong and it’s up to me to fix it. Later on I found other things he wrote: “Nine Stories”, “Franny and Zooey” and “Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction”. I discovered a very sad man, with little belief in the goodness of life, and with that a great sense of humor.
Now the man who helped shape the darker parts of my mind is gone, and all we have left with are bananafish and a sweet Scottish song:
